Shooting Stars is an opportunity for the student filmmakers to put their talent to test. It is a forum for the young minds to voice their views on the present day scenario through their films. The competition is open only for students. Students from all streams of under graduation and post graduation can participate in the competition.

The films and documentaries should not exceed 10 min duration. Cash prizes are awarded for three categories.

• Best Konkani film
• Best Short Film
• Best Documentary film

Movies shall be sent on or before 13 January 2011.

The event date will be announced soon.

Competition Guidelines:-

• Your entry can be either a short documentary film or a short fiction
• It can be based on ANY THEME!
• Duration: should not exceed 10 minutes
• Vulgarity, obscenity or glorification of violence will not be entertained
• Language: in ANY language! Films in languages other than English should have English sub-titles.
• Konkani films will have a separate category. Hence you could send in entries in this special category.
• Technical crew of the film shall not exceed 6 members (the main team; assistants and artists can be any number).
• A team can send in any number of entries.
• Registration fees will be Rs. 300/entry
• Last date to reach your entry: January 13, 2011.
• The entries should be addressed to the HOD, Dept of Mass Communication, St Aloysius College, Mangalore by courier.

Please enclose the following while sending your entries for Shooting Stars:-

• THREE DVD copies of each film.
• Registration fee should be sent in DD form in favor of  THE PRINCIPAL, ST ALOYSIUS COLLEGE, MANGALORE;
• Synopsis* and Contact details of the team head – Contact number & email id.
• “Bonafide letter” duly signed by the head of the institution, certifying the names of participating crew as the students of the particular college/ university/ department should be sent along with the entries.

The crew of the films selected for the final round will be intimated by email/ phone before the festival.

The winners of the various competitions held at a span of two days were the lucky few who were given medals and certificates for their outstanding performance by none other than Mr Jayaraj himself.

Addressing the gathering that thronged the Eric Mathias Hall, Mr Jayaraj, many time national award winning director, spoke of cinema being a world of creation. Mr Jayaraj began his talk with a question as to how many would like to venture into the field of direction. Asking a series of question with unanimous approval for each question from the students, Jayaraj urged students to join this vibrant field at a young age. He talked about the enormous potential that lay in this field. He said anyone who had answered ‘yes’ to any of his questions had the potential to be a director.

Mr Jayaraj highlighted the importance of script in movie making and said that screenplay was the blue print of films. He encouraged students to come up with stories which he himself was willing to direct. Just like all his movies that have audience gripped to their seats, even his words of wisdom had the same magic in them.

Here are the jury details for the various events that were held in the two day Media Fiesta, Kaustubha and Shooting Stars 2010.

Pitch-in-sanity, Mad Ads with a twist and Bull’s Eye, Press Conference had eminent judges from the field of journalism. Mr Vinobha K.T, reporter of Deccan Herald is a graduate in English Literature and has also completed PG Diploma in Journalism. He has worked as a reporter in a local daily in Kasargod, Vijay Times and The New Indian Express. Mr Sudipto Mondal, of The Hindu was the second judge for the events. Mr Sudipto is an accountant by training and has completed B.Com from Christ College, Bangalore. Mr Sudipto is a character voice over artist and has lent voice for nearly 100 radio commercials. After having completed PG Diploma in Journalism from the Asian College of Journalism, he has been working with The Hindu since 2007.

The judge for Snapdots, Photojournalism was Mr Rajashekar Rao, a freelance photographer and videographer. His other works include, screenplay writing for Kkusum (Sony TV), dialogues for Ayushmaan (Sony TV), Ek Ladki Anjaani Si (Sony TV) and Tumhari Disha (Zee TV). He was the assistant director for Shabd (Feature film) and assistant scriptwriter for Shabd and Supari (Feature film).

The judges for Decibells (Radio Jingle making competition) and Pro-Bono (Public service television announcement) were Ms Concepta Fernandes and Mr Yatish Baikampady. Ms Concepta is the Programme Executive of All India Radio, Mangalore. Mr Yatish is one of the directors of V4 Media, and CEO of Panambur Beach Tourist Development Project.

Jury for Shooting Stars 2010

When it comes to movies, there are different aspects based on which it can be judged. Here in Shooting Stars 2010, our jury comprised of a film maker as well as film distributor. And the details are as follows:

Eashwar Santhosh, film maker and member of Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA). He has six years of work experience with the renowned director Jayaraj. His recent project includes remake of Malayalam movie 4 The People into Kannada.

The second juror was Mr N.R Sudhir, movie distributor and director of Cinevision Distributors Pvt. Ltd. He has been in the field of movie distribution for the last 25 years in all languages. His recent projects include Before the Rains, The Hangman, Perfect Mismatch and Shoot on Sight.

The valedictory event had Mr Jayaraj, the internationally acclaimed director as the chief guest. The audience was thrilled by his presence and this added more glitter to the already shining event- Shooting Stars 2010, the national level student short film making competition.

Out of the 21 movies recived from across the country, 14 were selected to be screened in the finals. Three movies were nominated for each category- short film and documentary. Here again the results stood out with Highland Drive Road, from IIT, Madras bagging the first place in short film category and The Third Kind, submitted by Father Muller’s Homoeopathic Medical College, Derelakatte bagging prize in the documentary category.

The movies were judged by three eminent personalities from across the country. Mr Eshwar Santhosh, film maker and member of Film Employees Federation of Kerala was one of the three judges. N.R.Sudhir, Director of Cinevision Distributors Pvt. Ltd from Mumbai was the second judge. The third judge was Mr Rajashekar Rao, Head of Ankit advertising, Indore.

Kaustubha 2010 in its inaugural year opened a platform for students even from non-media studies colleges. As always the event opened with a grand and distinctive inaugural. The chief guest for the function was Ms Giselle Mehta, director of Allegro Ventures Pvt. Ltd. and former IRS officer. She is an active theatre person and a writer. Team Kaustubha was blessed with her gracious presence.

The inaugurals took off invoking the blessings of the lord and also showcased a welcome dance, which enthralled the audience. Adding to the already joyful ambience, the unique inaugural different from the usual lighting the lamp made its mark with declaring the event open by glowing lights which read “Kaustubha 2010”. Well typical of the Department to come up with something new always.

The first event on stage Pitch-in-sanity (Mad Ads with a twist) brought all five registered teams on stage representing products of their own choice. The twist to this competition was that participants could express only through actions sans words. It was gibberish to the extent that even music could only be instrumental. But these challenges only made the competition much stronger and exciting. Here are a few snaps:

Bull’s Eye, the press conference followed the gibberish act by the different teams. And this was a total change with words alone doing all the talking. Each team was given a situation to prepare on, but minutes before they enter the stage a crisis was also introduced. And yes it was fun to watch how they handled the situation. Well kudos to all the teams for a wonderful war of words.

The afternoon session was allotted for preparing for the other events. It was during a span of three hours that the teams went on making their Pro-Bono- the Public Service television advertisement making competition, Decibells- the radio jingle making competition and Snapdots, photojournalism. The various teams guided by their efficient escorts (a special mention to the undergraduate students who actively managed and helped their respective teams).

Celebration knew no bounds with the cultural programme that unfolded in the evening. The students from the Department of Mass Communication set the stage on fire with their brilliant performances ranging from all types of dances to songs and even drama. Well no amount of words can match what was displayed on stage. Take a look at this…

Kaustubha is the National Level Media Fest organised by the Department of Mass Communication, St Aloysius College, Mangalore.

What are the competitions included in Kaustubha?
Kaustubha 2010 in its inaugural year includes five competitions- two onstage events and three off-stage events. The onstage events include Pitch-in-sanity (Mad Ads) and Bull’s Eye (Press Conference). The off-stage events are Snapdots (Photojournalism), Decibells (Radio Jingle) and Pro-Bono (Public Service television ad).

How many can participate in the competition? 
Kaustubha 2010 entertains one team per college comprising of  a maximum of 6 members. Each competition has its maximum intake of participants and varies from competition to competition. One member can participate in more than one competition.

Is there a special requirement for a team to participate in the fest, like college or subjects?
A team can be from the undergraduate or from the post graduate courses. The fest is open to non media colleges as well. A team can also be a mixture of undergraduate and post graduate students.

What are the facilities provided in the fest?
Every particiapting team’s food requirements for both 28 & 29 January, 2010 will be taken care of by Team Kaustubha. Accomodation will be provided to outstation students. However, equipments like still camera, video camera, laptops and desktops, fire wire, editing suite, musical instruments etc will not be provided by the host college. Each participating team will have to make their own arrangements for this.

Who will guide us through the fest?
Each team will be guided by two escorts from the host college throughout the fest. Any doubts or clarification during and before the fest can always be clarified with the student co-ordinators and lecturers of the host college.

Will there be clash in the timings of competitions?
The five competitions in Kaustubha have been charted taking care that they do not clash with each other. There will be ample time for each team to participate in every event without missing out on any. 

When is the recording time for Decibells, Radio Jingle?
Radio jingle can be recorded on day one, 28 January from 10.30-12.30. Each team will be allowed a recording time of 20 minutes. The slot should be booked by each team at the time of registration. Editing of the radio jingle will be assissted by MCMS students. Music instruments if any should be brought by the partcipating college. No pendrives or other USB devices will be allowed in the radio studio. The particiapants will have to record in in the software available in the radio studio.

When will the results for each competition be declared?
The results for the various competitions as well as the overall championship will be declared on January 29, 2010 in the valedictory function which will commence at 3.45 pm.

Many times national award winner and internationally acclaimed director Jayaraj Rajashekaran Nair, better known as Jayaraj will be the Chief Guest for Shooting Stars 2010.

A Phenomenon in Indian cinema

Jayaraj started his career as an assistant director to Bharathan for his films Chilambu in 1986. He debuted as a director with Vidyarambam in 1988. His early career was into commercial films with Aakasha Kotayile Sultan, Johnie Walker and High Way to name a few. Deshadanam in 1997 was a milestone in his career. With this film he came to be considered as a serious film maker by critics. His films Kaliyattom in 1997, Karunam in 2000, Shantam in 2000, Daivanamathil in 2005 gave him national recognition. Daivanamathil in 2005, Karunam in 2000 and Shantam in 2000 also won him international acclaim including the Golden Peacock award.

He has made both commercial as well as art house cinemas proving himself as an intelligent thought provoking as well as an entertaining director. Mr Jayaraj started a nine series movie project on the Navrasas starting with Karunam, Shantam, Bheebatsam and Adbutham. He has entered the Limca Book of World Records with his movie Adbutham which was shot in a short span of two and a half hours.

Jayaraj is not only a national figure but an international icon in world cinema. His movies portay different yet unique ideas inspired from common people. He is a serious art house as well as a commercial film maker. His exhaustive movie career starting from the year 1988 with his directorial debut, Vidyarambam speaks about his gripping storytelling and clarity of vision.
